Abstract

680,221. Microscope objectives. WRAY (OPTICAL WORKS), Ltd. Aug. 10, 1950 [Aug. 10, 1949], No. 20840/49. Class 97 (i). A microscope objective has a concave reflecting surface and a convex reflecting surface of smaller diameter, which obscures part of a central aperture in the concave surface, formed as two of the external surfaces of a transparent block, the radius of curvature of the convex surface being less than one-half of that of the concave surface so that spherical aberration for the required conjugate foci is at least in part corrected. The reflecting surfaces are prefer. ably spherical and substantially concentric and the light entry and exit surfaces of the block may have their centres in the object and image planes respectively. To give full correction of spherical aberration and coma, a convergent lens system, preferably a doublet, may be located on the long conjugate side of the block. In order to increase the working distance and reduce the obstruction of the concave mirror by the convex mirror, the objective has the form shown. This objective comprises a glass block 4 having substantially concentric concave and convex reflecting surfaces R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, an entry surface R<SP>3</SP> centred in the object plane, and a lens B cemented to the block and having a surface R<SP>4</SP> correcting for coma and spherical aberration, in combination with a doublet C, D. The objective may comprise a block having cemented thereto a member of the same material, this member extending forwardly to the object plane so that immersion fluid may be used. To reduce diffraction effects caused by obstruction of the concave mirror aperture, the objective may incorporate a neutral tint filter whose transmission varies over its area. Optical data are given for two examples.
