Abstract

544,658. Lenses. TAYLOR, TAYLOR & HOBSON, Ltd., and WARMISHAM, A. Oct. 21, 1940, No. 15522. [Class 97 (i)] In a photographic &c. objective comprising two compound meniscus divergent components behind two simple convergent components and in front of another simple convergent component, the radius of the front surface R<SP>11</SP> of the rear component is greater than that of its rear surface R<SP>12</SP>, and the cemented surface R<SP>6</SP> of the third component is slightly collective. The glass in front of the surface R<SP>6</SP> may have a mean refractive index greater than .015 and less than .035 in excess of that of the glass behind it. The surfaces R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> of the front component may be, respectively, more strongly curved than the surfaces R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> of the second component, and the numerical sum of the radii of the concave air-exposed surfaces R<SP>7</SP>, R<SP>8</SP> of the third and fourth components may lie between 0.5 and 0.65 times the equivalent focal length of the objective. Complete data are set out for a lens corrected for spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism, field curvature, and distortion, over a semi-angular field of 24 degrees, and having a relative aperture of F/ 1.4.
