538,653. Lenses. TAYLOR, TAYLOR & HOBSON, Ltd., and WARMISHAM, A. Feb. 9, 1940, No. 2488. Drawings to Specification. [Class 97 (i)] In an objective comprising four air-separated components, the first and fourth being simple convergent elements, and the third a simple asymmetrical double-concave element, the second component comprises a double-convex element cemented to a double-concave one, the glass of the convex element having a higher mean refractive index and a greater Abbe v number than the glass of the concave element. The difference of the refractive indices of the second component may lie between 0.025 and 0.045, and the refractive index andAbbe numbers of the third component may be respectively higher than 1.65 and substantially less than 33.5. The shallow side of the third component may be towards the front, its radius lying between twice and six times that of the other side, and the air separation of the second and third components may lie between 7¢ per cent. and 12¢ per cent. of the equivalent focal length of the objective.
