Abstract

683,404. Making bearings. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. April 2, 1951 [Jan. 9, 1950], No. 543/50. Class 83 (ii) [Also in Group XXXVI] In a method of making bimetallic bearings the exposed surface of the matrix metal B is provided with a series of grooves B<SP>2</SP> surrounding separate projecting portions B' of the matrix metal, a second metal C is applied to the grooved surface and then removed from the exposed face to a point such that parts of the matrix metal are exposed between the lines of the second metal remaining in the grooves. A steel shaft A comprising a journal on to which a bimetallic bearing is to be formed, is electro-plated with silver (see Group XXXVI) and machined by turning with a diamondtipped tool to approximately the finished size. The surface is then indented with a knurling tool or chaser. After cleaning the surface is then plated with lead C, with preferably a thin bonding layer of tin between the lead and silver. The bearing is then cleaned, dried and turned or ground to its finished diameter, exposing rectangular islands of silver surrounded by lead in the grooves B<SP>2</SP>. The dimensions are such that the exposed surfaces of the silver represent between 40 per cent and 60 per cent, of the total bearing area. Other matrix metals, such as bronze, may be used.
