Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an aluminum-based sliding member which is highly resistant to wear, has normal appearance and does not suffer such an extent of scuffing, seizure or the like as to trouble the operation thereof.
CONSTITUTION: The present sliding member has an anodic oxide layer on the surface of a base material consisting of aluminum alloy containing at least 4W25wt% of silicon and a coating of a metal lubricant such as tin, lead, bismuth or indium provided on the anodic oxide layer. Accordingly, the scuffing and seizure are mitigated and wear is reduced, enabling the member to be used for a prolonged period of time. Especially when the member is used for pistons or cylinders of automobiles or the like, reduction in performance can be prevented, which contributes greatly to the saving of energy resources.
