682,270. Variable-speed gearing. CAVANAGH, J. A., and IRELAND, H. W. T. April 26, 1950 [May 2, 1949], No. 10286/50. Class 80 (ii). In gearing automatically variable with load comprising a driving member 6, 6a carrying centrifugal elements 15a, 15b, 15c each including a series of masses movable in an eccentric path around the axis of a planet pinion 9a, 9b or 9 c to which the centrifugal element is directly connected, as described in Specification 422,432, the pinions 9a, 9b, 9c mesh with separate sun wheels 3a, 3b, 3c, of which 3a is directly connected to the driven shaft 4, 3b is connected to the shaft 4 through a reducing train 42, 43, 46, 47 and a one-way clutch 48, and 3c is connected to shaft 4 through a reducing train 52, 53, 54, 57 and a one-way clutch 58. Three separate stages of torque conversion are thus achieved.
