Abstract
679,479. Mine roof supporting bars. BRAND, J., and RITCHIE, C. Sept. 15, 1950 [June 21, 1949], No. 16425/49. Class 20(ii) A mine roof supporting bar a, Fig. 2, is formed of light metal and is articulated to an adjacent similar bar b by means of a pin e passing through registering holes in a fork d and spigot s at the ends of the bars b, a respectively, the two bars being clamped together by a wedge m which at one side bears against a U-shaped protective covering i of sheet steel on the spigot s. The covering i has holes registering exactly with that in the spigot s so that the stresses exerted by the pin e are also taken up by the sheet metal. The holes in the spigot and fork may be protected with steel sleeves and the crutch o of the fork d against which the wedge bears may be formed with a steel covering. The bars are of I-section and are reinforced by zig-zag ribs g, Fig. 1, on the webs f and by triangular brackets h between flanges and webs. The ribs g on the sides of the web of each bar are relatively offset and the brackets h are arranged alternately on the upper and lower, flanges and are relatively offset on the two sides of the web.
