Class 20(ii) A steel capping beam of I-section for 4 welded lengthwise between the flanges mine roof supports is reinforced by plates to resist deformation of the web and flanges, by plates 5 welded transversely between the flanges to resist parallel displacement of the flanges, and by plates 3. 3' welded lengthwise to the upper and/or lower flange to resist bending. The plates 4 are as rear to the edges of the flanges as possible and are in effect struts. The plates 5 may be triangular, forming gussets 5<SP>1</SP>, or may be shaped to fit the inside contour of the flanges. The gussets or plates on opposite sides of the web may be staggered. Transverse plates may also be welded to the ends of the beam. There may be several plates 3, 3<SP>1</SP> one above the other of decreasing lengths, those outside being shortest, and their ends may be oblique to give a gradual change in crosssection. The plates on the top flange may be staggered with respect to those on the bottom flange. The width of the plates 3, 3<SP>1</SP> may be greater or less than that of the flanges, and their span a function of the lengths of the beam on either side of the prop 2. The reinforcing plates may be so disposed that their resultant centre of gravity is above the prop 2 and in the half of the beam more liable to break.
