Abstract

323,403. Wardle, E. J. Feb. 12, 1929. Ironwork, constructional; shoring.-The flanges of structural members for use in mines are cut away at one or both sides at their ends, so that the webs may overlap to form a scarf joint. The members may be in the form of horseshoe supports a, b, and the webs on one side of each bar at one end are cut away at b<1> so that these ends overlap and may be secured in place by fishplates and bolts. The fishplates may be cranked at the ends c<1> to close down over the joint ends, or may be provided with projections c<2> for the same purpose. The fishplates may be omitted and the joint secured by two bolts passing through the overlapping portions. Top and bottom sleeve plates c may be provided for the joint. The flanges may also be cut away on both sides and the joint provided with opposed butt-straps c cranked at their centres.
