679,277. Magnetic separators. ELECTROMAGNETS, Ltd., BOX, W. E., CLARIDGE, J. T., and TURNOCK, A. G. Oct. 18, 1950 [May 12, 1950], No. 11850/50. Class 72 A magnetic separator of the belt conveyer type has a pole piece located between the conveyer runs at the place where the conveyer changes direction and separation takes place, the pole piece being associated with a source of magnetic energy located to the rear of the pole piece so that the conveyer traverses the magnetic field produced. As shown a conveyer 10 driven by a drum 11 passes over an arcuate pole piece 17 having notches formed in its outer surface in which rollers 14, projecting slightly from the periphery and supported in bearings in side plates 15, may run. A core 18a of an electromagnet sets up a field of force round the pole piece and magnetic particles 19a are separated from non- magnetic particles 19b. The electromagnet may have a pole piece from its other end lying under the top run of the conveyer to premagnetize the particles, Fig. 5, (not shown). The pole piece may be shaped partly to surround a drum which has annular strips of magnetizable material on its surface, Fig. 8, not shown).
