Abstract

392,532. Magnetic separators. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Exolon Co. ; Commercial Avenue, Blasdell, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 6, 1931, No. 30843. [Class 72.] In a magnetic separator having a rotary attractor spaced from the polepiece of an electromagnet, the material to be treated being fed on to the topmost part of the rotary attractor, the polepiece is so positioned relatively to the attractor and to the feed means that there is produced in the region of the delivery end of the feed means a magnetic field converging in a direction or having a component of convergence opposite to the movement of the grain stream which retards the movement of the magnetic particles before they enter the gap between the attractor and the polepiece. The materials are fed down a slide 16, Fig. 1, on to the rotary attractor R<4> and pass into the gap between the part R<4> and the parabolic face of the polepiece 3<1>. A further polepiece 6<1> with an adjustable extension 40 may be mounted as shown. The component A of the magnetic field retards the more magnetic particles of the stream and the component B forces such particles closer to the surface of the shoot 16. In a modification, attractors R<1> .. R<6>, Fig. 4, are mounted between polepieces 1<1>, 2<1>, 31 and 4<1>.. 9<1> mounted on cores 4 .. 9 and supported on parts 1, 2, 3. The cores 4, 7 are connected by a keeper 13. The material is fed to the first pair of attractors R<1>, R<4> by shoots 16, 19. The strongly magnetic material passes out by shoot 22, the other material passing by shoot 24 and shoots 17, 20 to the second pair of attractors R<2>, R5, the feebly magnetic material passing on to the third pair of attractors R<3>, R<6>, where the final separation is made.
