Abstract
617,678. Magnetic ceparators. ELECTROMAGNETS, Ltd., BOX, W. E., and CLARIDGE, J. T. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30735. [Class 72] An electro-magnetic separator of the over band type has associated with the main coils 16a of the electro-magnets 16 additional coils 16b which are automatically brought into circuit to increase the ampere-turns and hence the magnetic field intensity, when the field due to the main coils falls to a pre-determined amount due, for example, to over-heating of the main coils. The separator consists of an endless band 7 disposed above and transverse to the material conveyer 4, the band passing round drums 8a, 8b and being driven by an electric motor 9. The height of the band above the conveyer may be adjusted by screw bolts 13, and the band may have magnetic feelers 7a. Magnetic material is retained on the belt by an auxiliary electro-magnet 18 until over the discharge chute 17, whilst any magnetic material carried round by the belt falls into a chute 19a and is returned to the conveyer 4 for further separation. The current relay 21 and its associated contactor 22 are so designed that when the intensity of the field due to the main coils 16a falls below a pre-determined value the contactor of relay 21 closes under spring pressure and completes the circuit through the relay and contactor 23 associated with the coils 16b, thus bringing the latter into circuit with coils 16a. A non-magnetic screen (e.g. of brass) 19b protects the magnets. Specification 617,680 is referred to.
