Magnetic separators.-In a process for separating fuel from furnace residues, ashes &c. the material to be treated is passed over a surface which is under the influence of a magnetic field and a powerful air current is positively directed. on to said surface to assist in the separation of the magnetic particles. The material is. fed on to a belt a passing over a magnetic drum or pulley b and an air current is directed on to the belt a from an arcuate cowl d secured to the upper end of a duct f mounted on a centrifugal fan e, the current being controlled by a valve f<1>. Before separation, the material may be ground. to such a degree of fineness that the fuel and the slag &c. are rendered mechanically independent, and the separator may be provided with two or more fields of different intensity so that the. non-magnetic, the feebly magnetic and the strongly magnetic materials may be received in separate receptacles such as m, n and p. Speci. fications 150,333 and 152,642, [both in Class 50, Fuel, Manufacture of], are referred to.
