Abstract
777,011. Magnetic separators. ALLENWEST S.A. (PROPRIETARY), Ltd. July 26, 1955 [Aug. 6, 1954], No. 21615/55. Class 117 A magnetic separator particularly suitable for the removal of magnetic particles from sludge or slime but which may be used for dry material comprises a non- magnetic rotatable drum 5 carrying spikes 8, which are magnetizable by a bi-polar electromagnet 2 having pole-pieces 3, 4. The spikes are disposed in a series of helices and sweep through the material to be treated which passes along an inclined launder 1 positioned above the electromagnet assembly, the magnetic particles adhering to the spikes being discharged into a hopper or shoot (not shown), as the spikes become de-energized on moving out of the launder. There is preferably a greater clearance between the launder and the spikes at the input end 9 than at the outlet end 10, coarser material thus being extracted before the finer particles. A modification, Fig. 5, includes a core 5, which may be of laminated construction, fixed to the shaft 6 on which the drum revolves. A coil carrying an alternating current for producing an alternating flux which is superimposed on the steady flux may assist in freeing the magnetic particles from the spikes. Additional spikes of shorter lengths may be provided on the drum and the material in the launder may be agitated by alternating magnetic fields or by vibrating the launder particularly when dry material is to be treated. For the separation of various magnetic materials of different magnetic susceptibility the main magnetic field may be graded; alternatively, there may be provided a number of separators in series with suitably adjusted fields. Permanent magnets are also specified for the main fields, and the spikes may be mounted on an endless belt or on a disc.
