Abstract
401,301. Magnetic separators. KLINGER, H., 4, Friedrichsstrasse, Vienna. April 4, 1932, No. 9628. [Class 72.] In a magnetic separator in which the materials to be treated are passed through a magnetic field formed by poles revolving about an horizontal axis, the field formed of lines of force which take a radial course from the poles to a casing in which the poles are mounted, is varied in intensity and/or reversed in direction during the traversing of the materials in the separating region. The field may be varied &c. by employing a low frequency alternating current and direct current may be employed for the generation of the alternating or pulsating field in addition to the alternating current. An unipolar magnetizable conveyer 3 provided with axially disposed ribs 4 separated by non- magnetic material 5 such as rubber is mounted on a magnetizable axle 2 on which are also arranged coils 6 consisting of different groups of windings so that they can be excited by direct or alternating current or both. The conveyer 3 is mounted in a casing 1 provided with electromagnets 7, which can be supplied with direct or alternating current. The materials are fed into the casing 1 by a hopper 9 and air or water may be fed into the casing by pipe 8 to aid in the conveyance of the materials through the casing. The non- magnetic material leaves by an outlet 10 and the magnetic material is detached from the conveyer 3 by a scraper 11 situated over the outlet 10. The iron parts of the apparatus which come into contact with the materials are coated with non-ferrous metal, enamel, rubber, &c. In a modification, the ribs 4 and the parts 5 are of helical form, and in a further modification, a partition with a gap is mounted on the axle 2 near the hopper 9 and the material which passes through the gap in the partition is fed to the conveyer by a helical conveyer provided with sliding arms. The coils 6 are protected from contact with the materials by partitions or covers.
