Abstract

880,913. Yarn-tensioning devices. TELEPHONICS CORPORATION. April 24, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. 14102/59. Class 120(2) A device for tensioning a moving strand comprises plates 18, 16 of magnetic and non-magnetic material respectively between which the strand passes, and an electro-magnet in the form of a coil 13 in a cup 11 around a core 12 having an extension 15 which lies under the magnetic plate 18; when the coil is energized, the plate 18 is attracted by the extension 15 to tension the strand. The plates 18, 16 slide on a post secured to the core, the apertures 19, 17 being wide enough to enable the plates to rotate, and the device may be operated automatically by varying the current supplied to the coil to ensure that the tension is constant irrespective of the linear speed of the strand, e.g. in a winding operation. The extension 15 and the rim of the cup 11 form the poles of the electro-magnet and the arrangement is such that the magnetic reluctance directly between the poles is greater than that between them via the plate 18 when it is in its lowermost position.
