Abstract

904,046. Knitting - machines. TELEPHONICS CORPORATION. Aug. 3, 1960 [Aug. 11, 1959], No. 26932/60. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group IX] In a device for tensioning a thread, in a circular stocking knitting-machine, the thread is engaged between a disc 33 and a plate 17 of magnetic material fixed relatively to and magnetically coupled to a core 15 extending within a coil 21 of an electromagnet, the core being magnetically coupled to a housing 11 of magnetic material for the electromagnet; the housing is upturned at 12 to provide an annular pole for the electromagnet of which the plate forms the other pole, the gap 18 between the two poles being of predetermined magnetic reluctance. A ring 32 of non-magnetic material is secured to plate 17 and is slotted to receive the pole 12 of the housing, the magnetic reluctance of the gap 25 between the pole and the disc being less than that of the gap 18, the reluctance of which is defined by the fact that the relative positions of the poles are fixed. The disc 24 is slidable along a roller 27 of ceramic material around which the thread passes while being tensioned, the disc and plate being shaped as at 30, 31 to minimize wear. The tension may be adjusted by varying the current through the electromagnet and by applying weights to the disc 33 which is shaped for the purpose.
