Abstract
824,860. Electromagnets. PERKIN-ELMER CORPORATION. July 20,1956 [July 22,1955], No. 22485/56. Class 35. A magnetic field is made uniform by providing pole-shoes having a series of ferro-magnetic discs 11 spaced by layers 12, 13, 14 of low permeability as shown in Fig. 1. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the pole-shoes are energized by permanent magnets 75 surrounded by coils 79 which are used to provide the initial magnetization of the magnets, and are then used for minor adjustments of the working flux. Alternatively a pure electromagnet may be used. Exact parallelism of the pole faces is ensured by spacing them with a parallel spacer 85, the pole discs being resiliently mounted by means of spring washers or pneumatic cushions. Further improvements in the uniformity of the flux may be achieved by making the rim 15 of the pole stand slightly proud of the discs, or by placing additional coils in the working gap to eliminate edge effects.
