[Also in Groups XIX and XXV] An attachment device, for a hardness tester 10 of the indentation type, comprises a frame 32 in which the tester can be adjustably mounted so as to be movable to and from the test piece 43, and an electromagnet or electromagnets 33 having at least three spaced-apart pole pieces 50, 51, at least one of which is movably mounted. Each electromagnet 33 comprises two pole pieces 50, 51, of which one, 51, is movable, two core pieces 52, 53, and a magnetic yoke member 62. Energization of coils 60-64 forms a closed magnetic circuit comprising the yoke 62, the cores 52, 53, the poles 50, 51 and the test piece 43. The pole pieces 50, 51 are removable and may be replaced by pieces having different shapes, the movable pole pieces being held in an adjusted position by a cam 70.
