Abstract

A holding relay has its armature movable between and retained by separate oxide containing permanent magnets having similar temperature - magnetization characteristics. The U-shaped armature A has its links secured by non-biasing hinge springs F on the outer arms of an E-shaped yoke M having a winding W on its centre limb which is also secured to a permanent magnet DM1. The coil mounting H also supports a second magnet DM2 which normally biases the armature to the position shown. Both magnets DM1 and DM2 are polarized in the same direction along the line of armature movement and magnet DM2 has a magnetic backing plate B to improve the flux distribution and act as a magnetic screen. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) the second permanent magnet is polarized in opposite directions at its ends and a separating plate is provided between the armature and second magnet. Preferably the magnets are of a material containing barium oxide or strontium oxide.
