Abstract

789,418. Polishing. REFLECTONE CORPORATION. Feb. 3, 1956, No. 3540/56. Class 60. Polishing apparatus comprises a container for receiving the object to be polished, a mixture of magnetic particles and a liquid in the container, and electromagnetic means for imparting motion to the magnetic particles to effect impact of the particles on the surface of the object. An object 11, Fig. 1, to be polished is supported in a non-magnetic container 10 within which is a mixture 12 of magnetic abrasive particles of steel or any other ferromagnetic material and liquid, e.g., water or a light oil. Air-cored magnetic coils 13, 14 at the ends of the container are alternately energized through a switch 16 operated by a cam 17 driven by a motor 18. In a modification, the alternate energization of two iron cored coils is effected by a multivibrator circuit including a double triode and a power amplifier. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the alternate energization of the coils 13, 14 is effected by a vibrating reed 28 acted upon by a winding 27 and spring 30 ; an additional coil 25 is fed with high frequency alternating current, so that the magnetic abrasive particles travel in an undulating path.
