Abstract

926,067. Magnetic separators. BETEILIGUNGS - UND PATENTVERWALTUNGSGESELLSCHAFT. March 23, 1961 [March 24, 1960], No. 10710/61. Class 117. Suspended magnetizable particles are separated from a liquid by conveying the liquid on a belt 1 through a magnetic field, the belt travelling at least as fast as the liquid to avoid turbulence of the liquid. As shown in Fig. 1, the belt 1 is of shallow flat-bottomed trough section and is guided beneath a second endless belt 4 with its side edges in contact with the belt 4, the two belts 1 and 4 being driven at the same speed. The belt 4 surrounds a stationary magnet 6 which extends beyond the reversing roller 3 of the belt 1, the separated particles picked up by the belt 4 being discharged on to a plate 8. Fig. 3 shows an alternative arrangement wherein the belt 1 is guided around the lower portion of the periphery of a horizontally mounted rotating drum 12 enclosing, or formed as, a magnet 13. Removal of the separated particles from the drum periphery is effected by a brush 15, which in the case where the drum is itself a magnet, may be a rotating induction brush. In a further arrangement the drum may be rotated between the poles of an electromagnet, the belt passing between the drum periphery and one of the poles, and the drum periphery being circumferentially grooved to effect local concentration of the magnetic field. Such local concentration may also be effected by a drum formed by, or enclosing, a series of narrow magnets 33, Fig. 8, embraced by plates 34 which provide converging pole shoes 35 at their peripheries, the belt 31 having a liquidcarrying recess 37 in its surface aligned with each pair of pole shoes 35.
