Abstract

472,758. Magnetic separators. KRUPP GRUSONWERK AKT.-GES., F. March 24, 1936, No. 8795. Convention date, April 17, 1935. [Class 72] In a magnetic separator, the material to be treated is fed on to the upwardly moving part of an endless band passing round a number of separating rollers or drums containing electromagnets, the band being vibrated in a vertical direction so as to loosen the material and facilitate the separation of the magnetic and non-magnetic material into superimposed layers, the non-magnetic material being uppermost and discharged first from the band at the delivery end of the separator. The band 6 passes over rollers 4, 5, having stationary disc-shaped poles 7, 8 within and mounted on shafts 14, and the material is fed on to the upward run of the band by an inclined shoot 3, which may be corrugated, on to which it is fed from a hopper 1 by a vibrating plate 2. The band is vibrated by rods 12, 13 provided with rollers and mounted on the ends of a lever 11 mounted on a pivot 10 which is rocked by a lever 22 having an aperture 21 for the pivot 20 of a roller 18, the latter being turned by contact with a non-circular plate 15 mounted on the shaft 14. The plate 2 is operated by a lever 17 carried by the roller 18, the contact between roller 18 and the disc 15 being maintained by a spring 19. The band 5 may be of channel shape, and the non-magnetic material passes down a shoot 23 and into a hopper 24, and the magnetic material into a hopper 25. In a modification which is intended for wet separation, the material is moistened before being fed on to the band, and further moistening means provided over the other end of the band. The material on leaving the band is then passed into the wet separating apparatus described in Specification 416,534. Instead of the arrangement shown, the band may be vibrated by other devices such as alternating current magnets.
