Abstract

Ferric oxide-containing ores are first treated with hydrochloric acid gas at a temperature which does not exceed 200 DEG C to produce ferric chloride and water vapour, the temperature being high enough to expel a substantial proportion of the latter but at the most only a small amount of the former, the water vapour is separated, and the ore is treated with further hydrochloric acid at 200-700 DEG C to volatilize the ferric chloride already present and being formed. Ores which contain hydrated ferric oxide are preferably first heated to remove combined water; carbonate and magnetite ores should be roasted under oxidizing conditions at 400-800 DEG C. The chloridization is preferably effected with the ore present as a fluidized bed as disclosed in Specification 677,690, and the ferric chloride formed may be treated with steam to produce ferric oxide as disclosed in Specification 677,645.
