Abstract
In the reduction of non-titaniferous iron ores there is incorporated with the ore 0.5-5.0% by weight thereof of one or more of the carbonates, hydroxides, chlorides or oxides of sodium and potassium, or of inorganic salts thereof which on heating decompose to yield the oxide and, without intermediate roasting, reducing the treated ore with a carbonaceous reducing agent at a temperature below that at which agglomeration occurs. The product is comminuted and iron separated by conventional methods. The addition agent may be added in the form of an aqueous solution, while the treated ore, which may be palletized, is preferably reduced in a rotary kiln.
