Abstract
In the recovery of gold from material containing gold and iron by a process which comprises roasting the material at a temperature of 500-1600 DEG F., preferably 900-1400 DEG F., and treating the roasted material with an aqueous leaching solution, e.g. of a cyanide or chlorine, for the extraction of the gold, the roasted material is heated at a temperature of 1650-2400 DEG F., preferably 1800-2150 DEG F., before leaching. Roasting may be effected in a fluidized bed or Edwards-type roaster. Roasting time may be 1-10 hours and is preferably 1-4 hours. The roasted material may be pelleted before the heat treatment. The heattreated material may be crushed so that at least 90% passes through a 200 mesh screen before leaching. Leaching may be effected with an aqueous solution of sodium cyanide and lime. Three comparative examples are given. Specification 833,719 is referred to.
