Abstract

Uranium bearing materials are treated with elementary chlorine in a liquid aqueous medium and the resulting solution is treated to precipitate an insoluble uranium compound. The source material is preferably comminuted and leached with aqueous acidified hypochlorite solution, suitably bleaching powder and sulphuric acid. The material before treatment with chlorine may be roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere with or without lime, or may be subjected to a chloridizing roast with a chloride such as common salt. According to an example, a flotation concentrate from a gold ore contaiaing uraninite was roasted with lime at 700-800 DEG C., crushed and treated in a closed vessel with aqueous hypochlorite solution, acidified with sulphuric acid. Gold and uranium values were dissolved and recovered as a filtrate. Gold was preferably precipitated by electrolysis and the uranium recovered from the solution by known means.
