Abstract
Titaniferous ore containing iron, at least 50 per cent of which is in the form of ferric compounds, is treated to remove the iron by leaching in hydrochloric acid at a temperature of at least 175 DEG C. and at a pressure sufficient to maintain a liquid pool of hydrochloric acid. The ore, which may contain 35-90 per cent of TiO2, is preferably finely crushed and leached for several hours with concentrated acid, e.g. containing 25-40 per cent HCl, preferably with agitation.
