Abstract

Rutile is prepared from ilmenite by heating ilmenite to a temperature between 600 DEG C. and 1000 DEG C. in an oxygen free atmosphere containing free sulphur vapour, cooling, and then treating the product with water and free oxygen at a pressure between 20 psig and 100 psig at a temperature between 100 DEG C. and 200 DEG C., thereby producing granular skeletal rutile aggregates together with a hydrated iron oxide sludge and sulphur globules, from which the rutile aggregates are thereafter separated physically. The oxygen free atmosphere may be maintained by the presence of carbon or carbon monoxide. The free sulphur vapour may be derived from pyrite, boiling elemental sulphur, or hydrogen sulphide, carbon disulphide or other compound which at the temperature of the process decomposes to give free sulphur. If the rutile product contains impurities not removed by the above, for example chromium or manganese, they must be removed by conventional ore-dressing methods. The leached rutile product may be further freed of the remaining sulphur and iron oxide by washing, drying and then washing with a warm concentrated acid.
