Abstract
Sulphidic copper-containing ores and concentrates are roasted by a fluidized-solids technique at 550-750 DEG C so that the copper is obtained in water-soluble (sulphate) and acid-soluble (oxides) form, and iron present is insoluble ferric oxide. The fluidizing oxygen-containing gas, which may be air enriched by oxygen or diluted with nitrogen as may be necessary, is employed, on the oxygen basis, not to exceed 400 per cent over the stoichiometric amount, the excess being preferably of the order of 50 per cent. Multiple fluidized beds may be employed, some or all of the fluidizing gas supplied to the lowest passing successively from bed to bed to the highest; alternatively, each bed may be independently fluidized by gas which is separately removed. A high temperature roast with a small excess of oxygen may be followed by a lower temperature roast with a larger excess. The temperature of the bed may be controlled by spraying thereon a liquid, especially the residual solution remaining after the electrolytic precipitation of copper from the solution obtained by extracting the roasted material. Cooling coils may alternatively be used. Two forms of reactor, and a flow diagram are shown.
