Abstract
Sulphidic raw materials containing iron and copper and/or nickel and/or cobalt are roasted to a sulphur content practically equivalent to the content of said non-iron metals and treated with a solution of ammonia in the presence of an oxidizing agent, preferably oxygen or air, and the solution separated from the iron oxide residue. The partly roasted one may be subjected to a sulphatizing or chloridizing roast prior to the ammonia treatment and in this case the oxidizing agent may be omitted. An ammonium salt such as the carbonate may be present in the leaching solution and increased pressure may be employed. In the example a nickel-copper ore was roasted at 700 DEG C. in a drum roaster and then treated with aqueous ammonia containing 100 gms. ammonia per litre. Fluidized technique may be used in the roasting. The sulphur dioxide may be used to produce sulphuric acid.
