Abstract

Titaniferous iron-containing material, e.g. ilmenite, admixed with carbon is treated, suitably in a fluidized state, with chlorine and moist air at elevated temperature, e.g. 800-900 DEG C to produce ferric chloride and a titanium concentrate, which are separated, the ferric chloride is oxidized in the vapour phase to ferric oxide and chlorine, and the latter and additional chlorine, if necessary, is reacted with the titanium concentrate and carbon, suitably in the fluidized state, to produce titanium tetrachloride. Oxidation of the ferric chloride is effected immediately above the bed in which it is formed using air and/or oxygen. The carbon which is mixed with the titanium concentrate is blown into the reaction chamber with the recycled or additional chlorine.
