Abstract
Sulphidic materials containing molybdenum together with copper, bismuth and/or lead, are reacted in the dry state with gaseous chlorine at a temperature up to 300 DEG C., whereby the molybdenum content is not attacked by the chlorine while the copper, bismuth and/or lead are converted to water-soluble chlorides and are removed by leaching with aqueous liquid. Iron may also be present and is partially removed in the process. The temperature may be 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. The chlorine may be mixed with a diluent gas such as nitrogen; preferably oxygen is excluded. The process may be carried out in a rotary furnace, multiple hearth furnace, or in a fluidized bed furnace. In examples sulphidic molybdenum ore concentrates containing molybdenum, copper and iron, and molybdenum, copper, bismuth and lead, are treated with chlorine and leached with water.
