Abstract

1312321 Titanium oxide; titanium halides; ferric oxide KERALA STATE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT CORP Ltd 11 March 1970 [11 March 1969] 11710/70 Headings C1A and C1N Titanium compounds, i.e. the oxide or the halides, are produced from ore, such as ilmenito which contains mixed oxides of titanium and iron by roasting the powdered ore at a temperature above 1000‹ C. to oxidize FeO in the ore to Fe 2 O 3 , mixing the roasted ore with carbon and heating the mixture at or above 700‹ C. in the absence of air to obtain a homogeneous mass, powdering the mass and treating the powdered mass either by roasting in air to yield a product from which titanium oxide substantially free from iron can be readily separated or by halogenation to yield a halogenated compound of titanium substantially free from iron contamination. The roasted ore may be mixed with twice its volume of carbon, and iodine crystals may be added as catalyst. The carbon may be coke, coal, or coal tar. After roasting in air, the iron containing part may be separated mechanically, e.g. by magnets using a magnetic belt. The powdered mass may be halogenated by heating with NH 4 F, NH 4 HF 2 , NH 4 Cl, or gaseous Cl 2 , Cr 2 , I 2 , F 2 or HF, optionally with NaCl and I 2 as catalyst. The iron-containing residue may be ignited to give Fe 2 O 3 .
