Abstract
In the continuous production of titanium tetrachloride by the fluidized chlorination of a titanium-bearing material with chlorine or a chlorine-containing gas in the presence of carbon or carbon monoxide, the solid reactants are suspended in a portion of the liquid titanium tetrachloride product, which is introduced directly into the reaction zone at such a rate that the heat absorbed in vaporizing and heating the titanium tetrachloride introduced maintains the desired temperature in the zone. The reaction chamber may consist of an outer shell of iron or steel with an internal refractory lining. The chlorine containing gas may be the gas obtained when titanium tetrachloride is oxidized to yield titanium dioxide. The chlorination is preferably carried out between 700 DEG and 1200 DEG C.
