Abstract

As a step in the production of titanium dioxide pigment titanium tetrachloride is heated to an elevated temperature, e.g. 2000 DEG C., by passing it through an enclosed zone electrically-heated by carbon resistors. Minor amounts of chlorides of other metals, e.g. 1 to 2% of aluminium chloride, may be added to the titanium tetrachloride to obtain a product containing Al2O3. It is stated that the presence of free halogen, e.g. free chlorine, acts to suppress the tendency of metal chlorides to become subchlorides at high temperatures, and accordingly 1% up to 5% of free chlorine may also be added to the titanium tetrachloride.
