Abstract
A method of fluorinating benzotrichloride and its alkyl and chloro-substitution products by halogen exchange consists in reacting these compounds or one of their partially fluorinated derivatives in vapour or liquid form with sodium, barium or potassium fluorosilicate at temperatures exceeding 200 DEG C. Catalysts which may be used in the process are iron powder, anhydrous ferric chloride and aluminium chloride. Silicon tetrafluoride produced in the process may be reconverted into fluorosilicate in the known manner and reused in the process of the invention. In examples: Benzochloride-difluoride and benzotri-fluoride are obtained by reacting benzotrichloride vapour with sodium fluorosilicate (1); the chloride-difluoride obtained in (1) is converted to trifluoride by a similar process (2) and a mixture of compounds in which one, two and three chlorine atoms on benzotrichloride are replaced by fluorine atoms are obtained by heating sodium fluorosilicate, benzotrichloride and iron powder (3).
