Abstract

A carbon tetrahalide in which at least one halogen is fluorine and any remaining halogen atom or atoms is or are chlorine is obtained by reacting carbon tetrachloride with calcium fluoride at a temperature of 400-650 DEG C. in the presence of FeCl3 and NaCl. The reaction may be carried out in a FeCl3-NaCl melt and the molar ratio of FeCl3:NaCl is suitably in the range 0.8:1 to 1.2:1. The sodium chloride is preferably employed in a finely pulverized form, but instead of NaCl and FeCl3, compounds which yield NaCl and FeCl3 under the reaction conditions may be employed.
