Abstract
A process for making sulphur tetrafluoride comprises reacting chlorine trifluoride with two to three mols. of sulphur monochloride or sulphur dichloride per mol. of chloric trifluoride at a temperature below the boiling-point of the sulphur chloride being used, and separating sulphur tetrafluoride from the reaction products. Either of the sulphur chlorides may contain dissolved sulphur or chlorine. Sulphur tetrafluoride may be separated by (a) liquefying the reaction products followed by treatment with excess boron trifluoride to form the adduct BF3.SF4, from which sulphur tetrafluoride is obtained by known methods, e.g. by passage of its vapour over heated sodium fluoride; or (b) when sulphur monochloride is used, using this to strip chlorine from the reaction products in a countercurrent system. Reaction is preferably effected above the boiling-point of chlorine trifluoride, viz. 12 DEG C., preferably at 15-25 DEG C. to. Specifications 877,458 and 883,673 are referred to.
