Abstract

Chlorine is reacted with pieces of elemental antimony in excess, at a temperature between the melting and boiling points of SbCl3 to produce liquid antimony trichloride which is withdrawn by gravity, the chlorine being introduced to the reaction zone at a point removed from that where the product is withdrawn. The temperature should be below the boiling point of antimony trichloride and preferably not above 95 DEG C. Chlorine may be passed down a vertical tube of e.g. lead or mild steel containing pieces of antimony and having jackets supplied with cold and hot water or steam, the products being withdrawn at the bottom and unused chlorine passing to an absorption tower.
