Abstract

670,194. Centrifugal separators. TRIGGS, W. W. (Wyandotte Chemicals Corporation). May 26, 1949, No. 14095/49. Class 23 [Also in Group XXVIII] A centrifugal separator for use in a mercury pumping system (see Group XXVIII) comprises a circular chamber 13 having a tangential inlet 12 for the mercury which is entrained in a stream of lighter liquid such as water. The chamber has a dished bottom 14 around which the mercury is collected at 15 and is drained out through a passage 16. The lighter liquid rises through a central neck 18 and passes to a circulating pump P. A gas escape 21 is provided. The term mercury includes liquid mercury containing dissolved sodium or other amalgamated metals or elements.
