Abstract

930,329. Discharging slag. POWER-GAS CORPORATION Ltd. Jan. 26, 1962 [Feb. 17, 1961], No. 5935/61. Class 51 (1). The hearth of a slagging gas-producer, Fig. 7, or furnace is divided by a partition 14 into a hearth proper 15 and a slag reservoir 16 from which the slag is discharged over a weir 19. A passage 18 at the bottom of the partition and below the slag levels in the hearth 15 and reservoir 16 connects the hearth and reservoir, and a burner 23 maintains the slag in a molten condition in the reservoir, while a water jet 32 quenches the slag as it falls over the weir 19. The reservoir 16 may be below the level of the slag in the hearth 15, Fig. 5, the pressure of the gases from the burner 23b holding slag in the hearth 15. The passage 18b below the partition 14b does not extend above the normal level of slag in the reservoir 16. The slag may fall continuously over the weir 19 into an open water bath receptacle, or the receptacle 43 and weir 19 may be enclosed by a casing 42, the pressure within which is maintained at or above that in the gasifier by a passage 73 with a non-return valve 78 and the action of the burner 23. The pressure is periodically reduced by a vent valve 62 and a valve 76 by-passing the non-return valve 78 to allow slag to fall over the weir 19. A pressure differential indicator 77 gives an indication of the depth of slag within the furnace. An interlock valve 44 connects the quenched slag receptacle 43 with a lock hopper 45. The quench vessel 43 is divided by vertical partitions 47 and an upwardly directed partition 48 separates the liquid inlet 50 from the liquid outlet 49. An outlet 58 at about the liquid level is connected through a separator 59 to the pressure release valve 62 and the quench liquid circulating pump 51. The interlock valve 44 is preferably open when the slag is allowed to fall into the receptacle 42. The partition between the hearth proper and the slag reservoir may be made of silicon nitride.
