Abstract
861,383. Desulphurizing pig iron. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE. Aug. 12, 1958, No. 25822/58. Class 72 Molten metals are desulphurized by flowing the metal through a vessel provided with a partition acting as a siphoning device, the metal passing below the partition and a powdered desulphurizing agent suspended in a small quantity of gas being insufflated through one or more orifices in the wall of the vessel. As shown, molten pig iron is poured into one side 'A' of a vessel having a partition 3 which does not reach the bottom and a concentrated suspension of lime in a gas is insufflated through one or more tuyeres 4 in the side 'A'. The metal flows below the partition and is discharged over a lip 6 in the side B. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the insufflation tuyeres are arranged in the discharge side of the vessel and the treated metal is discharged through a hole in the side of the vessel.
