Molten pig iron contained in a closed vessel 20 with a vent 30 above the level of the iron is desulphurized under reducing conditions by blowing a stream of inert and/or reducing gas onto the molten surface from a non-electric lance 24 whose outlet is located above the molten surface, the gas pressure being at least one atmosphere above the pressure in the vessel, a desulphurizing agent such as CaO, CaC 2 or CaCN being introduced with the gas and at least 10 cu. ft. of gas per ton of iron being used. The gases may be nitrogen, hydrogen, helium, neon, krypton or xenon or mixtures of these and the desulphurizing agent which is finely ground is introduced into the gas stream via injector 27. 1-5% of a deoxidizing agent such as powdered Al, Mg, or Si may be incorporated with the desulphurizing agent.
