Abstract
Crude iron, e.g. containing 0.10 to 0.25% S, is desulphurized by injecting under pressure through a pipe into a bath of the molten iron, e.g. at a temperature of 1150 DEG to 1250 DEG C., a stream of carrier gas such as air or preferably nitrogen in which is suspended a powdered mixture of lime and 1-18% by weight of the mixture of soda in an amount of not more than 5 litres of gas per Kg of the powdered mixture, which may also contain CaCO3 and/or CaF2. The gas is preferably injected at a pressure 0.1-0.5 atmosphere above the static iron pressure at the pipe outlet. The lime and soda may be stored in separate vessels connected, e.g. by screw conveyers, to a pneumatic mixer so that the lime/soda proportion may be continuously adjustable during injection, e.g. the amount of soda in the mixture increasing during injection, initially being lime without soda for the first 6 Kg. per metric ton of iron; the rate of injection may also be increased. A specific composition of a basic slag formed on the bath surface is 30% CaO, 2-4% CaS, 4% SiO2, 2%Na2O, balance iron granules and iron oxide.
