Abstract

A gas blowing lance for use in refining iron comprises an iron or steel tube coated, over at least the length to be immersed, with a mixture of powdered and/or granular limestone or dolomitic limestone and inorganic binder, such as ordinary or low-sulphur Portland cement. The relative proportions of limestone: cement by weight should be between 75:25 and 35:65. The thickness of the coating may give about 3 inch external diameter to a 1/4 inch- 1/2 inch tube, depending upon the heat resistance and rigidity required, and the amount of impurities which can be absorbed by the slag. The coating may be moulded around a wire wrapping placed round the tube. Specification 918,298 is referred to.
