Abstract

Silicon steel is manufactured by blowing molten pig iron in a tiltable vessel with oxygen and lime, preferably injected as a powder in the oxygen stream, to produce a steel base, then tilting the vessel to discharge a predetermined amount of its metallic content through a tap hole into a first tapping bottom-pour ladle to which a predetermined amount of silicon has been added, e.g. as element or Fe-Si to give 2-4% Si in the steel, bottom-pouring the metal from the first ladle into a second teeming ladle and adding further silicon, preferably to the descending stream of metal, to bring the silicon content to the desired value, and teeming the steel from the second ladle when it has reached teeming temperature. Primary slag may be removed at an intermediate stage of the blow if the phosphorus content of the pig iron is high, e.g. 0.5-2%.
