Abstract
813,420. Centrifugal separators. NASH ENGINEERING CO. April 30, 1957 [July 27, 1956], No. 13719/57. Class 23 [Also in Group XXVI] In the liquid-ring pump shown in Fig. 1, a mixture of compressed gas and liquid entrained from the liquid ring is discharged through discharge ports 50 and passages 59 to auxiliary axial-flow impeller blades 76, which expel it to a separating chamber 78. The blades 76 also have a centrifugal separating action, whereby liquid is thrown outward and gas is forced towards the centre. Separated gas passes through a central opening 83 to a passage 86 leading to a discharge pipe 88. The opening 83 is restricted to provide a high gas velocity for the purpose of muffling the noise made by the pump. The separated liquid is drained off through a pipe 82. The pump may be disposed with its shaft horizontal and the drain pipe 82 directed downwards. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the auxiliary axial-flow impeller blades 76b have extensions forming centrifugal impeller blades 132 which discharge the separated liquid through a volute 128. Separated gas and vapour is discharged through a central pipe 135.
