Abstract

911,253. Centrifugal pumps. SIEMEN & HINSCH. Dec. 24, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958], No. 43807/59. Class 110 (1). A liquid ring gas pump having at least one stage has two separate outlets, in a pressure chamber adjacent the working chamber, which allow separate withdrawal of the gas and liquid from the pressure chamber. Gas is admitted to the casing 2 through an inlet 3 and passes through a suction slot 4 into the working chamber 13. Liquid is admitted at any point on the suction side of the pump or at the hub of the impeller 1. A mixture of liquid and gas passes through a pressure slot 5 into the pressure chamber 6, separated from the suction chamber by a baffle 7. The mixture strikes the walls of the chamber 6 which may have vanes to separate the liquid and gas. The gas leaves the pressure chamber through a pipe 9 and the liquid through a pipe 8 when the pump produces a high vacuum or both leave through the pipe 9 at low vacuum conditions. A valve 10, which may be responsive to the vacuum produced, regulates the liquid flow. Silent running of the pump is obtained by keeping the chamber 6 largely free from liquid at high vacuum conditions and by having a cushion of liquid before the slot 5 at low vacuum. In multi-stage pumps the separate outlets for gas and liquid of one stage may be connected to separate inlets for gas and liquid in the following stage. Alternatively, the prevention of an accumulation of liquid in the pressure chamber may only be necessary on the last stage.
