668,966. Construction and cooling of cylinders. ROTHMANN, G. March 10. 1950, No. 6116/50. Class 7(ii) In an air-cooled motor-cycle or other engine having a light metal cylinder head 5 held sealed against a cast iron or other cylinder 2 by blots 13 between the crank casing 1 and a rigid steel or cast iron frame 11, the head 5 is so supported as to be subjected to compressive stress only, and the cylinder 2 is in the form of a sleeve cylinder 2 by bolts 13 between the crank casing 1. As shown, applied to a fourstroke engine, the frame 11 mounts a camshaft 10 and levers 8 operating overhead valves 7, a cooling channel 15 being provided in the head 5. Cooling ribs 16 and a liner 17 defining the channel are provided. The cylinder 2 re-acts on the casing 1 through a flange 3 and the frame 11 has a cover 14. The bolts 13 may have thinned shanks.
